The importance of studying humanities

Just as importantly, we believe that our mission is to help students prepare for a rich, meaningful and engaged life that goes well beyond job titles and salary levels. But, that is only the shell of a humanities education. To develop a global perspective by studying cultures throughout the world.

Why do the humanities matter?

I believe these claims and I know they are based on solid research. Needless to say, such remarks are immensely gratifying for any academic. Learning means you can do better in school with less stress and worry it helps one get better grades,which can get one into better colleges and better grades allow one to get better, higher paying jobs.

At Washington College, we believe the education we provide our students is far more than just career prep for their first job. Through the work of humanities scholars, we learn about the values of different cultures, about what goes into making a work of art, about how history is made.

That being said, the fact is that one does not become successful or proficient in any endeavor or any profession and that includes STEM fields without a good, solid grounding in critical thinking skills that a liberal arts education provides.

Look at humanity, is this not what we do all thetime? I spoke with my friend Dr. To appreciate what is enduring and to be able to tell the difference between the meaningless and the meaningful. Colleges are full of engineering students who may not immediately see the value in studying literature, art, the classics, philosophy or religion.

Research into the human experience adds to our knowledge about our world. Through the work of humanities scholars, we learn about the values of different cultures, about what goes into making a work of art, about how history is made. Studying the arts in college prepares the person for a lifetime of pleasure and appreciation, of being open to new experiences and of becoming that ideal every liberal arts college strives to produce--a life-long learner.

Both are particularly important in a government system that relies to a high degree upon citizen participation.
